APPENDIX A

A compilation of recent first county records Aug 1997-Nov 1999

In these days of Bird Boxes & Rare Bird Alerts, and many birders chasing someone else's find, "Appendix A" was coined by Rob Hewitt and popularized by John Sterling as a reward for finding your own rare bird. "You may have a high list," John might inquire, "but are you on Appendix A?" The mythical Appendix A existed only in our collective memory until now; this was an attempt to write some of it down. The list goes chronologically backwards from Nov 1999 and runs back to Aug 1997. The mythical Appendix A runs backwards into infinity and some observers appear many times (e.g., I'm told Rich Stallcup would appear on 89 records in MRN and 14 in MTY). This is just a short slice of Appendix A.

One is credited with an Appendix A bird if it is a first county record, you were the first to find (or in some cases, first to identify) the bird, and the record is documented. Only reports supported by documentation (written details, photo, etc.) should appear on Appendix A. The documentation must be sent to the appropriate North American Birds editors and, when relevant, to the California Bird Records Committee (CBRC). Those species listed with an asterisk (*) below are pending CBRC review and acceptance. Citation here does not represent any sort of official acceptance, just the compiler's opinion. There are surely mistakes and omissions here, but an attempt has been made to get this close to the truth.
