Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus melanocephalus) 26 January 2011, Crooked Tree Village, Belize District, Belize.


Here the two forward facing toes are visible. Trogons have heterodactylous feet in which the first and second toes are directed backward while the third and fourth point forward. The barely visible green back indicates this is a male.

Two races are recognized. This is the nominate race which ranges from SE Mexico to NE Costa Rica. Another paler race confined to W Costa Rica is considered of doubtful validity by HBW.
