Green Heron (Butorides virescens virescens) 26 January 2011, Crooked Tree Village, Belize District,
These small herons were very common and aggressively chased off whatever other birds I was trying to photograph. This one was particularly determined to have his photo taken.
Four subspecies are currently recognized, with this bird being the nominate race ranging throughout the eastern United States through Panama and the Caribbean. Other races are confined to the West, Baja and the Bahamas. South of Panama, this species is replaced by the similar Striated Heron (Butorides striata) with which it was formerly lumped under the name "Green-backed Heron."
