Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor ruficollis) 26 January 2011, Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize District, Belize.

This is an adult in basic plumage. In breeding condition the base of the bill turns bright blue.

This species favors southern swampy areas but we only saw a few in Belize. It is thought to be declining in North America after a period of range expansion during 1940s to 1970s.

This is the same subspecies as found in the United Sates. The nominate race is smaller and paler and replaces it over much of South America. A third race (E. t. rufimentum) confined to Trinidad is recognized by BNA but not by Clements.
