White-whiskered Puffbird (Malacoptila panamensis inornata) 1 February 2011, Chan Chich Lodge,
Orange Walk District, Belize.
![]() Puffbirds are confined to the neotropics and are in their own family, the Bucconidae. We encountered several of these plump, quiet birds in the shady forests. This one got too close and I had to back away to get the scope to focus. This is a male. Females are grayer. Four subspecies recognized. This is the most northerly and characterized by more orange-buff on the belly and fainter ventral streaking compared to the others.
