Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) Coyote Point, San Mateo County, California, USA; 10 November 2007 Photo © 2007 Joseph Morlan

I liked soft feathers reflected in the water of this winter plumage Eared Grebe. In Europe, this species goes under the name Black-necked Grebe. It is common in the western United States, but rare in the East. North American birds are the race P. n. californicus which has a longer bill and less white in the wing than subspecies found in Europe and Africa.
