McCown's Longspur (Rhynchophanes mccownii) 24 April 2004 - Pawnee National Grasslands, Colorado. Photos © 2004 Joseph Morlan

This is another longspur where I'm used to seeing the drab winter plumage, so this distinctive breeding plumage male at Pawnee National Grasslands in Colorado was a real treat. Even more interesting was their display flight. These birds skylark over the grasslands, then raise their wings up high and parachute downward with their mostly white tail spread wide, gliding somewhat like a nighthawk.
