It seems every time I look at this Yellowlegs and then walk away, I'm left with a different impression. It seems there are characteristics in conflict (and what I perceive seems to change). Until I sat down today to take my guess (that's about all it will be), I was leaning towards Greater.

However, my look at it today has made me decide that the bill was not as long as I thought previously and that hint of an upturn was no longer evident. I am now leaning towards Lesser for a couple of factors; 1) I was mistaken in the impression of the bill, and 2) there is a lack of spotting/barring/streaking along the sides that should be evident even in a juvenile Greater. Lesser Yellowlegs it is.

I'd also like to add to the fray by suggesting another possible trait to consider. I seem to recall being told that the ankle joint on Greaters is much more heavy or pronounced relative to that of the Lessers. I don't know if this is quantifiable and I don't recall the source of this advice. As with the bill, my first impression of the knee joint was that it was 'chunky', but today it seems fairly 'dainty'.

I blew the last nighthawk, so I'm not touching this one.

Jim H.
