Olive Sparrow (Arremonops rufivirgatus rufivirgatus) 18 January 2006 - Salineno, Texas. Photo © 2006 Joseph Morlan

This is the only Olive Sparrow we saw on our trip. This species is very shy, tending to skulk deep in the thorn scrub. Several times I tried to track down singing birds to no avail. Thus I was very pleased to get this photo on our last day. This species has been divided into three subspecies groups. The rufivirgatus group ranges from Texas to Eastern Mexico and is the dullest in coloration of the three groups. Olympus D-550z / Nikon FieldScope 3 / 30XWA (hand-held - no adapter). .
