Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber daggetti) 4 March 2006 - North Lake, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California. Photo © 2006 Joseph Morlan

This Red-breasted Sapsucker was a no-show for our ornithology class when we looked for him at first, but after walking around the lake, we checked the wells in the tree again, and he was there. The subspecies S. r. daggetti is the expected subspecies in California. It is duller than the nominate race which is resident in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. Notice the fairly prominent whitish mustache and nasal tufts.
