Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) 7 April 2012. Chico Oxidation Ponds, Butte County, CA Photos © 2012 Joseph Morlan

Robbie Fischer and I were puzzled by a small molting grebe at the Chico Oxidation ponds. After viewing the images, we believe it is a HORNED GREBE.

Photos appear to show the slightly decurved culmen, pale tip to the bill and white lores. Most importantly it seems to show reddish coloration on the neck and on the sides of the breast.

A check of eBird indicates at least a couple of previous records for the ponds so perhaps it's not that unexpected.
