Wilson’s Snipe (Gallinago delicata), Coyote Point County Park, San Mateo, SM © 28 March 2010 Joseph Morlan

This is the only species of snipe found regularly in North America. It is secretive, often sitting motionless, but our group watched one doing knee-bends; a behavior not mentioned in "Birds of North America" but described by Bent who wrote, "C. J. Pennock watched one standing on a bare mud flat with 'a continued up and down rhythmic movement of the entire body.'"

I'd be interested in hearing from others who have observed this behavior or
know its purpose.
