What is PSYC 61-62-63?
PSYC 61- 62- 63 allow students to earn academic credit for volunteer work in a psychology related community service agency or an on-campus placement and attendance at a CCSF class. The amount of credit (1-3 units) is determined by the amount of time spent volunteering. All students begin by registering for PSYC 61 (5 hrs/wk) and, if appropriate, change to PSYC 62 (10 hrs/wk) or 63 (15 hrs/wk) after their internship begins.
All students must attend a mandatory orientation session to learn about the class and arrange a suitable internship. The Fall 2009 Orientation is the first night of class, August 17th, 2009, from 6:00-9:00 P.M. in Batmale 349.
The PSYC 61 class compliments the internship. Meeting seven Monday evenings, 6:00-9:00 P.M. throughout the semester (8/17, 8/31, 9/14, 10/5, 10/26, 11/16, 12/14), it is an opportunity to get to know other interns and learn about their work, as well as to practice counseling and communication skills that can be applied to your field placement. It also provides a chance to further explore education and careers, and get personalized help in designing one's career path.

At orientation you will have an opportunity to meet some of the supervisors and learn about various internships. it's important to arrange an internship as close to the beginning of the semester as possible.
Where can I do an internship?
Internships are truly varied; they should be a match for your interest, or issues you would like to explore. You may want to work with certain populations. For example, children, adolescents, women, or LGBT. Or, you may be interested in learning about a particular subject matter. For example, juvenile justice, drug and substance abuse, domestic violence, or community outreach. You might want to work in the community or in an on-campus placement.
Community agencies have included The Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic, Youth Justice Institute, New Leaf, and The Institute on Aging. On-campus placements have included Re-entry Student Counseling, the African American Scholastic Program, and Project Survive.
In addition to the CCSF internships already in place, you may also contact the instructor to suggest a new internship idea. Remember, in order to get academic credit for your internship, you must register for PSYC-61.
Can I arrange my internship before the semester begins?
Yes, once you are registered for the class you may contact the instructor to arrange an internship before the beginning of the semester. Arranging an internship in advance allows you to spend more time at your placement once the semester begins.
