FIELD PLACEMENT IN
PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATION AND ORIENTATION FOR FALL '07: “A CELEBRATION OF
THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE”
Do you know any CCSF students interested in a career in psychology or the
helping professions? If so, please invite them to join Instructor Aliyah
Stein and the Psy 61-62-63 Field Placement in Psychology class for a graduation
and orientation on Monday, May 7, 2007 from 6:30-9:30 PM in Batmale 553 (pizza
and sodas served at 6 PM courtesy of the Psychology Club).
The event, titled “A Celebration of the Past, Present and Future” is an
opportunity to meet this semester's interns and their supervisors and begin the
process of selecting an internship for the Fall '07 semester. Attendance at an
orientation to the class is required and the May 7th event gives students the
greatest lead-time for finding an internship that best matches their interests.
If a student is unable to make the May 7th Orientation they should contact the
instructor aliyahstein@aol.com.
Though not as preferable, they can still find an internship over the summer or
at the beginning of the Fall semester.
The evening also marks the launch of a newly created Alumni Advisory Group
designed to give Psy 61-62-63 students access to CCSF alumni enrolled in
undergraduate or graduate psych programs in the Bay Area and around the country.
Many of the alumni will be in attendance that evening to share information about
their schools, internship opportunities, and jobs.
Psy 61-62-63 allows students to earn 1-3 units academic credit for volunteer
work in a psychology related community service agency or an on-campus placement
plus attendance at the Psy 61-62-63 seminar that meets nine Monday evenings
throughout the semester. The amount of credit (1-3 units) is determined by
the amount of time spent volunteering (5-10-15 hours/week). This semester,
students volunteered in the following agencies: San Francisco Suicide Prevention, Tim
Cordell, Monika Hawes-Haight Ashbury Free Clinic, Jason Durant-New Leaf, Sarah
Haas-Riley Center, Matt Miller-Harm Reduction Therapy Center, Marie Plazewski-Office
of Self Help-Oasis, Zaviera Reyes-Y.F.E.S. Crisis Line, Rebecca Sarino-UCSF
Institute on Aging, Berenice Morales, Jaeyoun Shin-WOMAN, Inc., and Gary
Collins, Jacob Sampson, Wendy Su-Americorps Foster Youth Program.
On-campus placements have included Numbiya Aziz-African American Scholastic
Program, Stephanie Hanger, Janelle Tillotson and Kathy Winship-Teaching
Assistants, and Satomi Harris-Project Survive.
This is an ideal program for a student wishing to explore, through a field
placement, the reality of being a psych major. It also provides excellent
experience for a student who eventually wishes to apply for a Bachelors or
Graduate program in psychology, counseling, social work, etc. Such
programs are often impacted and field placement experiences are powerful
additions to a student's application package.
Come join us for this exciting career-building opportunity!
