Mission to Mars 2010B (Image courtesy of NASA) Description: The success of the Martian rover program in 2004 has spurred the US is planning a manned mission to Mars in 2010. Owing to the amount of freight needed for the journey it was decided to send the “suitcases” on ahead before the astronauts would arrive. Your team is responsible for the safe delivery of this freight. You are attempting to design a model of your delivery system A landing site was identified with the 2001 Mars Odyssey orbital flybys. It’s an impact crater perpetually in shadow in the Valles Marineris canyon. With recent analysis, it was determined that the subsoil contains ice crystals – a source of fuel and water for the manned mission. Your design will fly over the canyon wall, make a final adjustment noting the crater’s position, and eject a freight container that will, hopefully, land in the center of the crater. Objective: To create a vehicle which travels down a prescribed “flight path” and manages to send a “freight container” to the aforementioned crater. Competition Pictures
