ENGINEERING 48L SYNOPSIS |

"Every technological product has to be designed and its fabrication overseen, and this is what engineers DO." Samuel Florman, The Civilized Engineer It is one thing to take engineering tests, but is quite another when you are asked to solder a circuit, measure a voltage, mill some steel, etc., etc. Out in industry, you are not guaranteed the luxury of having technicians working for you. An engineer must not only be able to analyze and model systems, but, if necessary, be able to fabricate or assemble anything needed for the job. There are horror stories retold year after year about senior/graduate engineering students who have no clue as to how to build stuff. It would be nice to dismiss the stories, but there are too many to ignore. Jr. High and High School hands-on shop classes are sadly in steep decline and if you aren't building stuff during you college existence, you may very well get your engineering degree without hands-on skills. This is not good - companies like practical experience, it makes you much more hirable. That's where this class comes in. ENGN 48L is a project oriented hands-on course. We will also focus on how to apply for company internships during your undergraduate years. I can't guarantee that you'll get that great job right out of college, but this class will give you an edge. Besides, it's going to be fun! |
