SAN FRANCISCO COASTAL GEOLOGY

CONTENT: This class will cover beach processes, including sand formation and migration; coastal erosion; and erosional and depositional features found and formed along the California coastline.

LOCATIONS and LOGISTICS: Field trip will visit 8 to 10 coastal locations from the Marin Headlands: Rodeo Beach south along the coast to Moss Beach/Montara, just south of Devil's Slide. Participants should be in sufficient physical condition to be outdoors all day, rain or shine, and walk up and down hills and across sand and uneven terrain for distances up to 1 to 2 miles at a single stop.

TRANSPORTATION: Thanks to a generous donation from the Court Family, we will be hiring a bus for the field days. Pick up and drop-off at CCSF.

WORKLOAD and GRADING: To receive credit for this class, students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on all assignments and attend both field days and the Orientation. The total estimated homework load for the average student who wants an average grade is 6 hours. Homework consists of reading relevant portions of the guidebook prior to trip and taking online open notes noncollaborative quizzes based on that reading. Additional graded assignments will happen in class and in the field and consist of completed field activities and end-of-field-day open notes noncollaborative quizzes.
