David Bacon -- Photojournalist

On Wednesday, October first, David Bacon will talk to students and teachers at John Adams about his career as a photojournalist. He will be talking from 11:15 to 12:15 in Room 202, next to the John Adams Library. Our class is going to attend the talk, so I thought it would be a good idea to learn a little about him before we go. There is an exhibition of his photographs in the John Adams Library, called Rebellion on the Border. We can look at some of those pictures on the Internet today, and we can look at the exhibition before the talk on Wednesday.

David Bacon lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He used to be a factory worker and a union organizer. He is very interested in labor and workers. Click here to see a picture of David Bacon.

The project Rebellion on the Border is part of his goal to show the life of workers living in the modern global economy. Nowadays parts for products can be made in different countries, assembled in another one, and then exported to some more. The international trade and movement of factories and jobs from the United States to other countries is all part of the global economy. These pictures show some of the stories of people who live and work just south of the U.S border. Some of them work in the maquiladoras there. A maquiladora is a foreign-owned factory in Mexico where imported parts are put together by lower-paid workers into products for export. Some of the pictures are about workers on Mexican farms that are owned by large companies in the United States.
