City College of San Francisco ESL 82 Advanced Composition Downtown Campus CRN 72049 Fall, 2007 Instructor: Margaret Benshoof-Holler In ESL 82, students will write five papers and one book review. Of the six papers written during the semester, there will be three in-class papers and three out of class papers. The last in-class paper will be the final exam. Papers will follow a number of different styles presented in the class reading assignments and lectures. Students in this ESL 82 course should expect to improve their writing to the point that they are prepared to write papers for all college courses. Improvement of papers means that students can write clear and well-structured sentences, paragraphs, and compositions by the time they finished the course. Students must be serious abut the course and ready to donate blocks of time to making sure they improve their writing. Students must attend class and only three absences are allowed. Students will also keep journals from which they will learn to draw ideas for their writing. Free writing practice will help loosen up and generate student writing. Assigned papers are to be turned in on time. Late papers will lose points. Papers are to be typed double-spaced and turned in in the proper format. In addition, homework may include sentence, grammar, writing structure and other work to help your writing. All homework assignments must be done and turned in on time. Text:
