- Why do foods have to be digested?
- Distinguish between mechanical and chemical digestion.
- What is peristalsis?
- Know the location, general structure, and function of these organs:

You should then be able to discuss digestion in either of two ways:
- Go through the digestive system and
- explain what happens in each organ, or
- Trace a particular nutrient through the digestive system and
- explain how it is broken down by each organ.
- What is the general role of hormones in the digestive process?
- What is the composition of normal feces?
- Understand the structure and function of a villus and its parts.
How are digested carbohydrates, proteins, and fats absorbed?
- How does the body metabolize:
- carbohydrates,
- proteins, and
- fats when all three are eaten in adequate amounts?
- What is meant by "absorptive" and "postabsorptive" states?
- Which hormone dominates each of these states?
- What is meant by "basal metabolic rate" (BMR)?
What are the factors which affect BMR?
