Diffusion and Osmosis
-
What is a molecule? What is Brownian movement?
-
What are the general rules governing the process of diffusion?
- What is meant by high concentration? Low concentration? Equilibrium?
- Define permeable, semipermeable, and impermeable.
- Describe the structure of the cell membrane.
- How do cell membranes control what passes through them?
- What is facilitated diffusion?
- What is the normal salt concentration of human body fluids?
- What is meant by isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions?
- What happens to a human cell placed in each such solutions?
- If you know the concentrations of various substances on either side of a membrane, and if you also know the permeability of the membrane to each substance, be able to predict which substances will (or will not) diffuse, and in which directions.
-
- Distinguish between diffusion and active transport.
- Where does the cell get the energy required for active transport?
- Define osmosis.
- What is meant by osmotic pressure?
- How is osmotic pressure related to the concentration of molecules which cannot diffuse? If the osmotic pressure of a solution is high, will water diffuse into it or out of it?
- What is dialysis? Filtration?
