Course Description:  There are three objectives for this course.  In the area of writing, students will be able to write an essay with several paragraphs, a clear thesis statement, and supporting ideas.  You will also work on developing ideas, revising ideas, and editing.  In the area of grammar, you will improve your ability to accurately use grammatical structures, including comparisons, adjective clauses, noun clauses, and a variety of verb forms and tenses.  In the area of reading, students will be able to read, interpret, and write summaries and responses to a variety of reading materials. You will be expected to do writing, reading, and grammar assignments every week. As a rule, you should plan to spend at least ten hours a week on homework and studying. Although I will not collect or grade all assignments, you will have quizzes and tests which include material from these assignments.  Some of these quizzes will be "surprise" quizzes.
