I was born in Washington, D.C. in 1946 and won a full-tuition scholarship to Yale University when I was 17. After graduating with a bachelor's and master's degree in architecture, I went to Mexico on a Foreign Area Fellowship. There I taught architecture at the Universidad Iberoamericana and worked in urban design. After returning to the U.S., I studied landscape architecture at UC Berkeley, started as a part-time instructor at City College in 1976, and became a full-time instructor in 1990. I was the Department Chair of the Architecture Department from 1996-99 and was the Construction Management Advisor. I am a partner in Young and Gonzalez Properties, Santa Cruz; and have an architectural practice doing residential remodeling. I have been licensed as a B contractor since 1976, an architect since 1979, and as a real estate salesperson-property manager since 1984. I have been a real estate agent with Barrelier Associates from 2000-2009. My community activities have included serving on the Regional Advisory Board of the Institute for International Education (1987-94). I retired from City College in June, 2002. I continue to do architectural work in the Bay Area alternating with real estate management, and am Senior Consulting Architect at the Community Design Center.
