hi, I'm very glad to be the first to write a review for this instructor. Overall, he is a very good teacher who is understandable and helpful. His workload is reasonable. Quizes are not difficult as long as you study the notes. Homework is very easy and is a good way to get the whole credit, and to boost the grade, too.
Generally speaking, there is one quiz every week (consisting of 5 questions and worth 20pts), one individual homework/week (worth 10pts), one group homework (worth 15pts for the whole group)
There is only one thing that I would like to mention: Since there are only 5 questions (4pts/each)/quiz, it's really easy to get high grade. On the other hand, if you miss one or two questions, you will lose many points. I've seen some of the old quizes, where there were 10 questions (2pts/each), and wonder if that way is better.
Also, there are only five quetions for half a chapter (sometime 3/4 chapter) so in my opinion, they don't cover all the information we study. Anyway, this is just my own idea...I don't really know which way is better.
The last word: don't cheat/copy on homework because he will find out easily and you will get "negative" grade! It's totally a silly way. Don't do it! Good luck!!!
i agree with the person above that the quizes dont cover the whole chapter. maybe that will be a great improvement for the next generation if you will..Sam is a good teacher, he's funny, and handsome so it wont be a waste if you get an F.
Sam is a good teacher overall. Sometimes he appears to be very generous. Evidence is he lets students resubmit their work if they want to get full credit. Other times, he would minus points for small, ridiculous mistakes. So watch out for details!!!
Sure no doubt that Mr Bowne is a great teacher. However, he should explain more clearly and repeat the grading policy during the course, especially near the end of the class to make sure that everyone understands it thoroughly. It is written in the "Policy Statement/Syllabus" but I'm sure that no one does really know how it works.
After the final result posted, I found out that students DO NOT need to/SHOULD NOT do well on quizes! Just focus on the final! Because if you do well on the final (and better than quizes' result), you will get extra points! For example, you just get about 67% on all quizes, but you get 100% on the final, you're going to have extra about 92 points!!! (worth more than four 100%-correct quizes!)
I just feel so sorry for those who did not know about this and did not take the final. It's really a mistake!
Very Well organized, a few technical glitches but the instructor fixed them ASAP and was very understanding (even of technophobes =P)
This is a great class. It gives me much convenience to learn office programs in my spare time without going to school. And the teacher is freat too. He gives fast reponse to emails and discussions.
Well I enjoy the online class and beginning able to go to your lectures classes if I need help.Mr.Bowne is a cool teacher always welling to help a student and mr.bowne is preety laid back if you do the work.
I would tell future students that this class will allow you the time that you need to study at your own pace. The instructor is very helpful with questions that you have about the coursework and the entire workings of the computer and to let you know that whatever information that he doesn't have, he will get it for you.
I recommend this course to all beginning students of computer information technology.
Thanks.
I think this is a very good organized coarse. I have learned a lot more in this class then I expected. Doing on line class is great because you can fit it in to your own personal schedule. The lessons are well planned.
great class for people who do not have the flexibility to take the face to face class. Textbooks are clear and easy to follow when doing homework, interesting to discover new shortcuts about microsoft word/excel that never knew before in all my years of using computers in college. Online quizzes fair and gets you use to using computers and typing. Questions answered by instructor fast and helpful. overall great class!
Enjoyed your class! I thought I knew a lot but I learned a lot more than I imagined! Thank you!!!
The class was very educating. I would recommend to ask less definition questions on the tests because they are in the back of the books. You are better off asking not direct questions.
Good luck next semester!
Take mr.bowne class he is very helpful and you will learn alot.
I think this is a great course for anyone to take. By taking this course, you are going to have a much better understanding of computer and its concepts. Most of all, if you read the book very carefully and are interested in the course, you can figure out whatever malfunction of your computer. Dr. Bowne is a great guy. He helped me whenever I needed him. He is very patient and understanding. In my opinion, you are not going to regret taking this class, especially with Dr. Bowne.
PS. If you take it online, you have to have the discipline to study all the time (on your own). However, whenever you need help, you can always go to Dr. Bowne's face-to-face sessions.
I give him an A+
From what I recall, i was informed that this was the first time you made an online class. As a student, this is also my first true online class and would like to comment that it has been a great addition to my schooling this semester and pretty much all the college classes I have ever taken. I really feel like I learned the material efficiently even though it was not a face to face session. The discussion boards were helpful, and you have been there to answer all my questions and needs in a very expedient fashion which i appreciate greatly. And whats great about this class is that i can put the work around my schedule and was fairly easy to keep up with. I do hope that others will get a chance to enjoy this type of class as much as I have. I don't think there is much to improve on, you definitely have everything figured out. The only problem in the beginning was the lack of time to take the quizzes, but you solved the problem very quickly by adding the extra five minutes. Probably since this is the last time I will talk to you, I want to thank you for being lenient with the fumbles I had with some of the projects and quizzes, you truly have been a great teacher. Thanks for everything.
Through all the classes I have taken Sam is my favorite teacher. He has a natural ability to communicate with encouragement for everyone and makes learning technology exciting and funny! Sam is always happy to answer your quiestions and even give you the time to ask them. Dont be afraid to raise your hand in class when you dont fully! understand a point or subject, he will elaborate.
the teacher is as always dynamic, and the course material is very structured and comprehensive. Online resources are fantastic.
Ill tell you what kind of Instructor you will get if you take a class with Sam... TNT! Top Notch Teacher! Just pay attention!
He is a great teacher take him he deserve and A+
This has been a very good course, i was very intimidated at first because i don't know anything about the computer much less how it works. This course really got my beak wet. The books are easy to read and follow it should be call Office XP for Dummy but they will be sued. prof. Bowne is a fine and knowledgeable instructor much prop to him for putting up with our $@%# and crying throughout the semester.
Wish I started the course on a better note, but I did learn a lot during 2nd part of course. The final did not seem to have enough time, I felt rushed. But seems like I get like that on every test. Maybe homework and quizzes could have been graded a little faster, that way more time to review while that chapter is fresh in your mind. Overall though, I think you have organized a very good course. Learned a lot more than I knew before the class. And thanks again for all of your help.
The online course was perfect for my schedule. I raally enjoyed doing he homework, which was very helpful especially for work. I was able to apply some of the techniques I learned. I prefer multiple choice for the quizzes because it was difficult at times to get all the wording down and I did not know what exactly you were looking for. Overall it was a pretty good class.

Dr. Bowne was accessible, clear and organized in his presentation of the subject matter. He treated people with dignity and respect and was able to communicate well with people from varying degrees of technical skills. His service background shows in his ability to address his answer to the level of the individual posing the question. He spoon-feed us some of the things we needed to cover in this (intensive) class by providing study notes. He showed unusual dedication and commitment to teaching even when his some of his students did not have returned the same level of commitment.
Dr. Bowne was enthusiastic, accessible, and presented the subject matter in an organized manner. He was able to address questions from individuals with varying levels of technical experience. He provided us with study notes that were very helpful in covering the essentials of this (intensive) course. He showed dedication and commitment to his students even when this was not always reciprocated. Sometimes he would get a little heavily into the jargon of the area but would always take time to clarify any terms students asked about; I would highly recommend him as an instructor. The MCDST portion of the class was very informative. The Help Desk portion was well-taught but largely intuitive for any one with any office work experience.

Although this class was difficult for me in the beginning I thought Sam did everything he could to be of help. He always seemed so eager to fit the needs of each individual student. He was also very enthusiastic about the subject matter and that attitude was contagious. At the end of the class I only wanted to take more classes from him and even started thinking maybe I should change careers. There is no one I would like to take another computer class from more. Sam is a great asset to CCSF and, as soon as I can, I will be taking another class from him.
Need to look no more if you are looking for a Microsoft XP class to take.
Read your chapters before class; turn in all the lab assignments(get as much hands-on as possible); take your quizzes - you will be fine.
I took this class as a refresher course but also an excellent class if you are shooting for Microsoft desktop support certification.
Sam is a good instructor; knows his stuff; willing to go the extra mile to help his students !!
By the way, "Windows XP inside out" by Bott/Siechert is a good textbook - plenty good info, easy to read.
exceptionally good instructor. the course itself is rigorous, a thorough review of windows, warts and all. but I'm sure that whatever course you take from Mr. Bowne, you'll appreciate his quality.
It was very interesting and you learn alot And it was great to have access to a lab right next door to the class as well, and have a tutor there too. The Instructor is a very kind and help one too. He is very willing to help you out and try to answer any questions you may have as well. It is very helpful if you intend on pursuing this line of work too.
I believe your class is organized well, and I have fun for taking the class. However, the textbook is only one that I had a comments. It was so difficult for me to get. So, I am now working on catching up your class.
I really don't know how Sam is a good teacher or not, maybe the course is too easy, but I want to say that Sam is a very kind person, he will give you chance to go to the right way and I am satisfied of him and I respect him too.

This class is the best class I'v ever took! The HWs is well considered, organized and useful. He deals with newest computer topics, and updates his homepage frequently. You can get lots of information from his class. I strongly recommend Sam's class!
Sam is a great teacher and he always appreciates students effort, and now it's the time we appreciate his effort. As a person, he is doing great, being kind and helpful and he does everything he can to help student. As a teacher, he spends more times on preparing for the lecture, checking homework, and correcting quizes, that is tough work, and he always smiles, that is the way it impresses me amd I think he will be a perfect person. I feel thankful and appreciate your efforts, you deserve a evaluation A++. Now I want to tell new student, if you try your best, Sam is the fair person that charge you and care you.
Great Teacher!
Subject was presented and passed to the students in a very professional way.
I learned a lot and very satisfied
Sam is an outstanding teacher and he is not an easy teacher for his students. So there is a lot of work and some of it is quite difficult and each assignment is very carefully outlined and explained. He wants his students to succeed and he wants us to work for that success.
Class: Spring 2005: CNIT 100
I am taking a Spring 05 CNIT 100P class. It is just after mid-term and I have to say I like attending Mr Bowne's lectures. So far I have missed only one class just because I was very ill. I encourage my classmates to attend the rest of the lectures. These lectures are very informative. I hope Mr Bowne will give us more extra credit work to make up our grades. For example: 5 extra cr points for each class attendance and 15 points for consecutive Tue and Thur classes. CNIT 100P is the basic level of computer course for people who do not know computer much like myself. In my opinion, 80% is up to the introductory level, and 20% is too advance for me. I hope Mr Bowne will spend one lecture on starting up the computer and explain the icons on the desktop, shortcut, control panel etc. I will give my overall recommendation of this class after final.
Class: Spring 2005: CNIT 100
Great teacher, makes everything understandable for everyone, makes you obtain some bonus points in class, will make you learn a lot.
Class: Fall 2005: 235
I took this class last semester, and so it has been one of the best cnit class I have ever taken in this department!! The course and lab docs were very easy to follow and the teacher is always prompt to assist any student.
Class: Fall 2005: CNIT 131
I really enjoy how Mr. Bowne introduce the many topics related to the internet and html to the class with a follow through homework assignment to help us better understand what was taught in class. He does a in class demo how to do the assignment and the take home instructions were clear. He is a great teacher. Take the class, it is worth your time. Nov. 28, 2005
This is a great class, I will tell my friend to take this Fall class.
I have not yet taken this class but look forward to in insights to daily useage.
Hello I really Liked Sam as a Teacher. He is very Helpful and most of all for me he kept me interseted very much.Thank you for all the lessons sam, I hope to have another class with you
Great beginners class for people who know about computers but was never formally educated. Lots of hands-on computer work that helps you practice what was lectured. Lecture information was related to current events and how internet safety was a daily issue.
Having taken Dr Bowne class I only regret not having done it before. He is very knowlegeable and enthusiast and make students feel very confortable. City College is lucky to have someone like him teaching here. If more teachers were like him this place would attract more students. I stopped taking classes for a while because I had some very terrible experiences with some horrible unprofesional teachers who should not be teaching at all here. Luckily, my experience with Dr Bowne this semestre has renewed my interes in continuing my education. He is really outstanding. Thank you Dr Bowne!
Class: Fall 2006 - CNIT 235: Windows Desktop Support Technician
I think Sam is a extremely knowledgeable and great instructor. I like how he goes over 'news of the week' at the beginning of his lectures, and I learn a lot of small things from him that I never knew before. Sam knows a lot about industry certifications including Microsoft so he would probably be a good person to get information or advice about certifications from. His class is also a 'pace yourself' type class and you can go ahead and procrastinate or do everything on the first day if you like. His website is well organized and up to date so you can get info about his class at any time as long as you have an internet connection. Its sorta like an online class with optional weekly lectures and in class work. Its great!
Class: none
it's the best!
Class: Fall 2006 - CNIT 100: Introduction to Computers
Come into the class ready to get your feet wet in computers. Not literally, that would be too shocking. Read the book, and do your homework. The rest falls in place. But that can be said about any class
Class: Fall 2006 - CNIT 235: Windows Desktop Support Technician
CNIT 235....Is a very Hands-on Educational Program to take at CCSF. The Instructor is very patient and is there when you need assistance.
