Pied Heron (Egretta picata) 1 August 2014. Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, NT, Australia

The body and crown is often described as slaty-black based on museum specimens, but it looks slate-blue in life. It has been suggested that the bluish "bloom" disappears after death in museum specimens. This is a restricted range species, breeding locally only in tropical wetlands of northern Australia and Wallacea. However, it is more widespread in the non-breeding season. This is an adult. Immatures are similar but have the head almost entirely white. Some authors place this bird in the genus Ardea. It also sometimes goes by the English name Pied Egret.
