This is a restricted range species, breeding locally only in tropical wetlands of northern Australia and Wallacea. However, it is more widespread in the non-breeding season. This is an mmature. Adults are similar but have a dark cap. Some authors place this bird in the genus Ardea. It also sometimes goes by the English name Pied Egret.
