Green Violetear (Colibri thalassinus cabanidis)
27 January 2009, Savegre Mountain Hotel, San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica
This was the most common hummingbird in the area. The males kept up a
constant, monotonous chirping song all day long. Females are similar to
males, but slightly smaller and duller on the underparts.
The nominate race to the north has a patch of blue on the chest which is
absent from C. t. cabanidis and other races south into South America.
The AOU recently removed the hyphen from the former name Green Violet-Ear.
