Good observation, Spenser. I am not sure why I never noticed the outside tail feathers. They obviously look "evenly barred" rather than "sparsely spotted". But I was starting to go your original way. The black on the face looks larger than some of the field guides portray it for Ladder-backeds. And the swatch of black on the nape appears larger than shown for Ladder-backeds in the books. I know the hybrid theory is the last refuge for cowards but it is worth considering.
