Hello! This course will not be using this website, but will be using WebCT for all the normal course activities once the semester officially begins. I just wanted to post a little bit of information about the course so you can determine if this is the course for you. Use the link below to get ALL the details about the course for the Fall 2008 semester, but here are some short details.
This course is designed for people with little or no background in science, so if you have taken any chemistry courses before and plan on using your science courses for a specific science-type job or major, this course is NOT for you. You should be taking courses in our main chemistry "stream", such as Chemistry 40, 101A, etc.
Course description:
Chemistry 110 is presentation of chemical principles designed for non-science students. The math requirements are very minimal - there is nothing more advanced than multiplication or division. The course emphasizes the chemical principles behind topics of current environmental, social, and scientific interest. In the course of learning about these topics, many of the basic chemical principles will be discussed and presented.
We'll be using this textbook: Chemistry in Context, 5th ed., published by the American Chemical Society. The 6th edition has just come out, but we'll be using the 5th edition (it's cover is yellow and brown). You can find it very easily (and inexpensively!) online. We'll begin using the textbook by August 27, so make sure you get it now!
There are only two required "in-person" class meetings. These will be for:
1) A midterm exam: Wednesday, October 15, 6-8pm in room S-204
2) A comprehensive Final Exam: Tuesday, December 16, 6-9pm in S-204
S-204 is on the second floor of the Science building on the Phelan Campus.
All the info for the class during the Fall 2008 semester can be found in this pdf file: Chemistry 110 info for Fall 2008 .
