module list |
Backing up is the process of producing a copy of all or part of the
data on your system, hopefully at regular intervals. There are many
programs to manage backups. We do not have time or space to discuss the
various backup programs and how to use them. We will discuss the issues
involved. We will also cover the use of two basic utilities for
archiving data used on a Unix system: tar and cpio. These are
sufficient for producing simple backups on basic linux systems and
create the most portable data formats for transferring data between
systems.
Preview question: It is ridiculous to back up an entire modern system frequently. What limitations would you make on your system to limit the time and space requirements of producing backups? After the backups are produced, how would you ensure that the copy is safer than the original? |
