In 1940, Timothy Pfleuger, architect for the City College of San Francisco, commissioned Johnson to carve three bas relief sculptures of athletes to be placed over the entrances of the newly constructed City College Gymnasium.

During the renovation of these campus buildings in 2008, these sculptures were removed and preserved.
