Frieze of Athletes, George Washington High School, San Francisco, CA

In 1942 the San Francisco Art Commission awarded Johnson a project at the George Washington High School where he created a tremendous frieze of athletes participating in various sport activities. This modernist, multicultural carving covers the entire retaining wall across the back of the football field, and still stands today.
