 Namaste

I honor that place within you, that essence from which all derives, that place of truth, that absolute, with the understanding that when you are within that core in you and I within me, then we are in essence one.--Ancient East Indian Greeting

Even as the finite encloses an infinite series. And in the unlimited limits appear, So the soul of immensity dwells in minutia.   And in the narrowest limits no limits in here. What joy to descern the minute in the infinity!                                                      --Jacob Bernoulli                                                                                        from Ars Conjectandi

giant clam relative

Taken with my Canon Powershot 45 while assisting veteran oceanographer Stephen Koch survey reefs in the Spratly Islands(Kalayan) located in the South China Sea.   The purple lips are those of a giant clam species that is imbedded in a large rock of coral.  The clam dissolves the coral to create room for its growth.  Benefit--not easily harvested for the dinner table. Draw back-- limited growth.   See more pics and a really giant clam by linking to General Handouts above then link to More pics.

Good news about the Spratlies-- 60 meter visibility.  Bad news -- significantly few pelagics and few fish in general given the size of the reefs. Really bad news ---some signs of cyanide fishing. High probability many of the live saltwater fish in the tanks in Hong Kong restaurants are harvested in this manner, cyanide and all.  Easy fishing for a day, dead reefs and destroyed spawning grounds for hundreds of years. Really great news, the Chinese have build a fortress on top of on of the reefs.
