The respiratory system provides oxygen to the tissues and carries away carbon dioxide to be expelled back into the atmosphere.

Cardiorespiratory System Schematic

Respiratory Functions

  • Pulmonary ventilation: in and outflow of air between atmosphere and lung alveoli.
  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide diffusion between alveoli and blood
  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide transport in blood and body fluids to and from the cells.
  • Regulation of ventilation and other aspects of respiration
