Greek Roots

  • logos: the study of
  • physis: nature or function of.
  • kine: motion.

Physiology: the study of life processes and functions. Our bodies work based on the symbiotic functioning of different systems, which all contribute to maintaining the conditions in the internal environment, aka homeostasis.

Kinesiology: the study of motion or movement.

Conflicting Ideas of What Kinesiology Is

  • The "Authorities"
    • Kinesiology as a Movement Science catch-all, encompassing Ex Phys, Biomechanics, Motor Dev, etc. This is the most widely accepted definition.
    • Kinesiology as a study, usually another word for Biomechanics.
    • The chiropractic fields of Applied Kines, Health Kines, Transformational, Manual, blah blah blah.
  • This Class
    Study human motion with regard to musculoskeletal and neuromuscular function.
