Reflect a little on your own reading process. What tends to slow you down? Is vocabulary a major barrier for you? Long and complicated sentences? Subject matter? Background knowledge? Focus? Lack of confidence? Speed? On the other side, what are your strengths as a reader? What is the hardest thing you've read and understood? What do you think will help you be a better college reader?

Advertising essay error logs: Fill in new error log sheets for this essay as you did for the previous one. You must turn in completed error logs before I will grade your midterm for grammar.

  • Read and annotate for credit chapters 18-20 (146-170) in Affluenza and the chapter on transitions, 101-113 in They Say I Say. (1 homework credit)
  • For your assigned chapter of Affluenza only, underline the sentence that gives the main idea of each sub section.  Underline the sentence or sentences that give the main idea of the chapter (thesis).  On a separate sheet of paper, paraphrase the thesis and topic sentences for each section. Your group of 3 will present to the class on the main ideas of the chapter. (1 homework credit).

Th   3/19   Transitions + discussion of the reading

Read 268-273 in Reading Culture on the ipod. Think about how Sullivan and Walker agree, disagree, or partly agree and partly disagree with each other and with Affluenza.

On your last essay, underline all the transitions you used. Did you use enough? Did you repeat any one phrase too many times? Add transitions that fit the meaning and make the essay smoother for the reader. If you have too many, change some of them to alternate transitions that also make sense. Resource: Refer to the back of They Say I Say.

Write, in your own words, what you think the thesis and the three or four most important supporting points are from each of the essays. Start to think about where the two writers agree and disagree.

Is the iPod/iPhone a good thing? Fill out the iPod/iPhone worksheet by downloading it, typing directly into it, and then printing it out to bring to class. You will need four quotations from each of the articles we read. You'll paraphrase each quotation and add your comments.

Post to the messageboard about your affluenza score and how accurately you think it describes your life. Do you think you have affluenza? Do you think you have been affected by the social forces described in the book? Negatively or positively? Do you disagree with the book that there is a problem?

Final homework credit: Download and fill out the anonymous 93 evaluation form. Print it out without your name. You will submit it anonymously and I will check off that you put a form into my folder.

Note: You can still turn in the error logs and bonus grammar reflection on the day of the final exam.
