Childhood

Paul Klee was born in 1879 near Bern, Switzerland. His father was German and a music teacher, and his mother was Swiss and trained as a professional singer. They encouraged their son to pursue music instead of his hobbies of drawing and writing poetry. Thus, Klee was an accomplished violinist when at the age of twenty he decided to study art, rather than music, for the next three years in Munich.

It was in Munich that Klee made influential Friends.
