Schloss Suresnes

At the age of 38, Klee rented a large studio in the Schloss Suresnes, a neglected old 1700's palace in Munich's artist quarter. He produced Black Columns In a Landscape that same year, which his son Felix said was inspired by the palace, its surrounding grounds, and nearby park.

was born in 1879 near Bern, Switzerland. His father was German and a music teacher, and his mother was Swiss and trained as a professional singer. They encouraged their son to pursue music instead of his hobbies of drawing and writing poetry. Thus, Klee was an accomplished violinist when at the age of twenty he decided to study art, rather than music, for the next three years in Munich.
