Expression Web 4 is one program in a four-program group called Expression Studio 4. To be able to use Expression, your computer must meet some minimum requirements. Hopefully you've checked them out before signing up for the class.

Microsoft has an arrangement, called DreamSpark, for delivering Expression Studio software for free to all City College students. Expression Studio includes Expression Web and several other programs. The process is lengthy and annoying, but it's free, and it's the full version.

These are the five procedures that you must carry out. Because each step is complicated, I suggest that you do each step on a different day…especially if you are not familiar with software installations. Also, when you download and save files, write down where you are saving them. Don't trust your memory!

I have written out the directions to the best of my ability and tested them on my own home computer. However, please note that neither I nor City College of San Francisco can be responsible if something goes wrong on your own personal computer. If in doubt, please hire a technical expert.

If you run into problems, try to find a more experienced computer user to help you. DON'T email me your questions…it's just impossible to do over the Internet, and in addition I'm not a technical expert. Find a more experienced computer person to help you!

Overview of the five procedures

Here's an overview of the 5 procedures:

  1. Create a Dreamspark account. Once you have a Dreamspark account, you have 12 months to access and download Expression Studio (which contains Expression Web…and lots of other stuff if you want it).

  2. Download an special file called an “ISO file” that contains Expression Studio.

  3. Prepare the ISO file for installation. To do this, you need to download and install a free program called PISMO FILE MOUNT AUDIT.

  4. Install all of Expression Studio (if you think you'll use all of it) or just Expression Web (all that is needed for this class). (Expression Studio consists of 4 programs; Expression Web is one of them.)

  5. Start up Expression Web and check a few things to make sure it's working.
